Volunteer PTSA
The Garfield Staff and PTSA urge you to volunteer to work with our students, faculty and administrators so that Garfield High School is a place where every student thrives.  We welcome and encourage the involvement of all parents and guardians, as well as members of the community.  To learn more about volunteer opportunities at Garfield, please contact Martha Layzer at 252-2400 or mmlayzer@seattleschools.org.  I am at school every day except Wednesday and my office is located in the PTSA Community Room (100a) just off the Commons so please stop by and introduce yourself!
Announcements and Opportunties
Current Volunteer Opportunties

Nurses Office:

Help keep our students safe!  Nurse Miller Sherling needs help taking an inventory of the emergency bins and compiling a list of needs for the bins and emergency backpacks for classrooms. 1-2 volunteers needed for chunk of time over a few days.  Time and days are flexible.

Drama Department:

Do you have a passion for drama? Mr. Hawk has a costume database he has not been able to utilize.  Volunteers are needed to take pictures of costumes and enter the details into a corresponding database.  This is a long-term project for 2-3 volunteers.  Once trained, the time and days are flexible.  Your reward is getting to see all of Garfield’s costumes!

Greenhouse:

Do you enjoy working in the garden?  Rachel Finley would love help with the maintenance of the greenhouse and garden.  Help maintain and water the garden space and mentor students in these tasks until a program is established.  Schedule can be worked out with Ms. Finley.

Classroom Requests:

Language Arts:

  • LA teacher, Mary Powers, is teaching a College Prep Read/Write class for 9th graders and would like tutoring help on block days twice a month.  The tutors will help students stay organized, write resumes and cover letters, apply to academic programs, and assist with study groups.

Science:

  • Rachel Finley, Biology and Environmental Science teacher, would like administrative help during her prep (2nd period) or after school.  She needs help with small grading tasks and organization.
  • Chemistry teacher, Susan Brierley, would like help on Tuesday and Thursdays after school to assist with lab set-up and takedown, and grading of first year chemistry papers.  Any science background is helpful.
