Volunteer PTSA
The Garfield Staff and PTSA urge you to volunteer to work with our students, faculty and administrators so that Garfield High School is a place where every student thrives.  We welcome and encourage the involvement of all parents and guardians, as well as members of the community.  To learn more about volunteer opportunities at Garfield, please contact Martha Layzer at 252-2400 or mmlayzer@seattleschools.org.  I am at school every day except Wednesday and my office is located in the PTSA Community Room (100a) just off the Commons so please stop by and introduce yourself!
Announcements and Opportunties
Read Right Volunteers Needed Immediately!
The Read Right program at Garfield is a highly successful program that helps students become effective readers. This program serves a diverse range of readers: students reading far below grade level and struggling academically, as well as students who excel academically but need to correct their reading deficiencies to better prepare for college. Volunteers are needed on Fridays to work with small groups reading passages and discussing comprehension questions. Tutoring is a year-long commitment, but Critical Thinking groups meet an average of 3 Fridays a month. Training provided.

Volunteers needed 1st, 2nd and 4th period.  You can volunteer for one or more class periods.

PTSA Membership Chair

The GHS PTSA Membership Committee needs you! We are in need of a Membership Chair. This person works with the data entry volunteer to form a two person committee. The PTSA Membership Chair is a member of the PTSA Board and is responsible for outreach to the parent and school community to encourage people to join the PTSA. This includes attending events at the school and answering questions about the PTSA. The data entry volunteer processes the PTSA membership forms, enters the data in the State PTSA database and delivers checks/cash to the PTSA treasurers.
Current Volunteer Opportunties

Greenhouse:

Do you enjoy working in the garden?  Rachel Finley would love help with the maintenance of the greenhouse and garden.  Help maintain and water the garden space and mentor students in these tasks until a program is established.  Schedule can be worked out with Ms. Finley.

Classroom Requests:

Science:

  • Rachel Finley, Biology and Environmental Science teacher, would like administrative help during her prep (2nd period) or after school.  She needs help with small grading tasks and organization.
  • Chemistry teacher, Susan Brierley, would like help on Tuesday and Thursdays after school to assist with lab set-up and takedown, and grading of first year chemistry papers.  Any science background is helpful.
